Also known as: Furadantin, Macrodantin, Niftran, Nitro Macro.

Active ingredient: Nitrofurantoin.

What Does Macrobid Treat?

Macrobid in the most cases is applied for curing different urinary tract infectious disorders. Inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA, proteins, cell membranes formation, inhibits the aerobic metabolism. It is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Shigella dysenteriae, Shigella flexneri, Shigella boydii, Shigella sonnei, Escherichia coli.

Its indications are: bacterial urinary tract infections (pyelitis, pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis), prevention of infections in urological operations or investigations (including cystoscopy, catheterization).

How to Take Macrobid?

Macrobid should be taken according to doctor’s prescriptions. It is allowed for adults and children but, surely, should be given to different age groups in different dosage. Adults and children older than 12 years old can take Macrobid pills twice per day (one 100 mg capsule per every 12 hours).

The medication is usually taken with a glass of water or with a meal.

Side Effects and Precautions of Macrobid

What contradictions may prevent you from taking Macrobid – a kidney disease, urination problems, jaundice, diabetes, anemia, vitamin B deficiency, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and a liver failure.

FDA pregnancy recommends avoid using Macrobid during the first month of pregnancy. Consult a doctor if it is allowed to use Macrobid during lactation. FDA pregnancy category is b for Macrobid.

Immediately drop taking Macrobid tabs if you have the following side effects:
• Shortness of breath;
• Sudden chest pain;
• Fever;
• Peripheral neuropathy;
• Nausea;
• Upper stomach pain;
• Itching;
• Loss of appetite;
• Dark urine;
• Pale skin;
• Since the nervous system and sense organs: peripheral neuropathy, fatigue, dizziness, headache, drowsiness and nystagmus;
• The respiratory system: interstitial changes in the lungs, bronchial obstruction, fever, cough, chest pain;
• From the digestive tract: hepatitis, cholestatic syndrome, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, pancreatitis, pseudomembranous colitis;
• Allergic reactions: lupus-like syndrome, arthralgia, myalgia, anaphylaxis, fever, eosinophilia, rash.

Interaction of Macrobid with Other Drugs

Antibacterial effect reduces the nalidixic acid intake - antacids containing magnesium trisilicate. Incompatible with fluoroquinolones. Means to facilitate the excretion of uric acid (Probenecid, sulfinpyrazone), can inhibit renal tubular secretion, which lowers the level of nitrofurantoin in urine (reduced antibacterial effect) and increases in the blood (increased toxicity).
