What Does Hydrea Treat?

Hydrea is usually prescribed for treating chronic leukemia, some cases of ovarian cancer and some types of skin cancer like melanoma or primary squamous cell cancer of a head and neck. Sometimes Hyrea is prescribed for patients who need the reducing of pains during anticancer therapy or require blood transfusions for treating cell anemia. But Hydrea won’t manage to treat sickle cell anemia completely.

How to Take Hydrea?

Take Hydrea exactly as you were told by your doctor. Never take large doses of the medication or for a longer period of time than it was initially prescribed. The dosage however can be adjusted according to your health condition.

Usually Hydrea capsules are taken once per day or by one capsule on every third day. One should take Hydrea at the same time according to the schedule. The medication can be swallowed whole with or without a meal. A patient should drink up to 10 glasses during a day when there was taken a capsule of Hydrea. Along with Hydrea you may be prescribed to take a folic acid supplement. Stick to all recommendations of your healthcare provider while taking Hydrea.

It is very important to wear disposable gloves every time when taking Hydrea capsules or holding a bottle with pills. Wash your hands thoroughly before taking a dose. It is forbidden to break or crush a Hydrea capsule. It is restricted to take a pill which was accidently opened or broken. Never open a capsule because the medication within can get in your eyes, mouth, nose or skin in a huge amount at once causing severe side effects. If the powder from a capsule interacted with your skin or eyes wash the area with soap and with large amount of water.

Wipe the powder from a broken capsule at once with a paper towel thoroughly all over the place where you can find the spilled medication and throw away the towel immediately. Store a Hydrea bottle in a place where kids and pets won’t manage to reach it.

Hydrea Side Effects and Precautions

Hydrea can provoke severe side effects if you suffer from certain medical conditions. Before starting to take Hydrea inform you doctor if you have or had: bone marrow suppression, HIV/AIDS, liver/kidney disease, you have been through radiation or chemotherapy.

FDA pregnancy classified this medication as D. Never take Hydrea if you are pregnant or a breast-feeding mother. While taking this medication take reliable birth control preparations and use condoms to avoid pregnancy.

Hydrea can significantly weaken the immune system by reducing the level of blood cells which fight with viruses. Check your blood cell level regularly while taking this preparation.

Do not take large doses of Hydrea at once. Overdose symptoms may include: drowsiness, swelling, mouth sores, purple discoloration of your feet and hands.

• Easy bruising and bleeding;
• Pale skin and lightheaded condition;
• Rapid heart rate;

• Dark urine, black-colored stools;
• Jaundice.

Interaction of Hydrea with Other Drugs

This medication may interact with many drugs. Tell your doctor about all meds you take and have recently taken including herbal preparations, over-the-counter meds, street drugs, vitamins and supplements.

Never take Hydrea if you are allergic to its active component – hydroxyurea.

Also avoid taking Hydrea pills along with the following meds: Videx; Zerit; any interferon drug like Actimmune, Avonex, Betaseron, Infergen, Intron, Rebif or Roferon.
