Flomax Review
Generic name: Tamsulosin.
Also known as: Flomaxtra, Veltam, Urimax.
What Does Flomax Treat?
In the most cases Flomax is prescribed for treating of BPH and urinary retention (treatment of similar disorders).
How to Take Flomax?
Flomax is supplied in capsules with a modified release, sustained-release capsules, coated tablets with controlled release.
The therapeutic effect occurs within 2 weeks after starting treatment. Tropism alfa1a-adrenoceptors located in the bladder, is 20 times greater than its ability to interact with alfa1b-adrenoceptors located in vascular smooth muscle. With such a high selectivity does not cause any clinically significant reduction in systemic blood pressure in patients with hypertension and patients with normal baseline blood pressure.
The medication should be taken orally. Start from 0.4 mg per day, drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Capsules and tablets are taken whole, without chewing; capsules of Flomax are consumed after the first meal, a standard tablet – regardless to the meal.
Side Effects and Precautions of Flomax
Contraindications of Flomax include: hypersensitivity and any renal or liver failure. Consult a doctor before starting to use this medication.
FDA pregnancy is C. Pregnant and breast-feeding women should avoid taking Flomax pills during pregnancy and lactation.
As with other alpha1-blockers in individual cases Flomax may be a reason of a reduction in blood pressure, which can sometimes lead to fainting. At the first signs of orthostatic hypotension (dizziness, weakness) the patient must sit or lie down and remain in this position until symptoms disappear.
Like any other medication Flomax is capable to cause a row of different side effects, among which are:
• Headache;
• Dizziness;
• Sleep disturbances (insomnia or drowsiness);
• Priapism;
• Back pain;
• Rhinitis;
• Orthostatic hypotension;
• Syncope;
• Tachycardia;
• Palpitations;
• Chest pain;
• Nausea;
• Diarrhea;
• Allergic reactions (revealed via such symptoms as rash, pruritus, urticaria, angioedema).
Flomax is capable to cause other adverse reactions which were not mentioned above.
Interaction of Flomax with Other Drugs
Cimetidine increases the plasma concentration, furosemide - decreases (significant clinical importance has not). Diclofenac and several indirect anticoagulants increase the elimination rate of tamsulosin. Diazepam, propranolol, trichlormethiazide, chlormadinone, amitriptyline, diclofenac, glibenclamide, Simvastatin and warfarin did not alter the free fraction of tamsulosin in human plasma in vitro.
In its turn, tamsulosin also does not change the free fractions of diazepam, propranolol, and chlormadinone trichlormethiazide. In vitro studies found no interaction at the level of hepatic metabolism of amitriptyline, salbutamol, glibenclamide and finasteride. Other bad interactions involve using of other alpha 1-blockers, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, alprostadil, anesthetics, diuretics, levodopa; antidepressants, beta-blockers, BCCI, nitrate and ethanol may increase the severity of the hypotensive effect.
