Generic name: Pramipexole.

Also known as: Mirapexin, Sifrol.

Active ingredient: Pramipexole Dihydrochloride.

What Does Mirapex Treat?

This medication can be prescribed for treating Parkinson's disease’s symptoms as a single medication or along with the combination of Levodopa.

How to Take Mirapex?

Dosage form of this medication is provided via the tabs. One tablet of Mirapex contains the active ingredient: pramipexole dihydrochloride monohydrate 0.25 mg, 1.0 mg (and this amount is equivalent to 0.18, 0.7 mg of pramipexole base). Pramipexole after oral administration is rapidly and completely absorbed. The absolute bioavailability of 90% and maximum of a plasma concentration is observed after 1-3 hours. The rate of absorption is reduced by food intake, but the total absorption of food intake is not affected.

If it is necessary for further increasing the daily dose was added 0.75 mg per week up to a maximum dose of 4.5 mg per day.

Individual dose should be in the range from 0.375 mg to 4.5 mg per day. As at early and late stage of Parkinson’s disease the drug was effective, starting with a daily dose of 1.5 mg. It is not excluded that in individual patients doses above 1.5 mg per day may provide an additional therapeutic effect, especially at the late stage of disease when shown to decrease the dose of levodopa.

Take this medication along with water, on empty stomach.

The daily dose is evenly divided into 3 tabs of Mirapex.

As discussed below, the initial daily dose of Mirapex is 0.375 mg ona daily basis and it can be increased every 5-7 days.

Pramipexole should be taken gradually over several days.

Side Effects and Precautions of Mirapex

Before taking this preparation tell your doctor if you have a renal failure or hypotension.

Cases of severe overdose are not described. Anticipated overdose symptoms are: nausea, vomiting, hyperkinesia, hallucinations, agitation and lowering blood pressure.

The main contradiction to avoid while taking Mirapex is hypersensitivity to pramipexole or to any component of this drug. Avoid using Mirapex along with levodopa, cimetidine, ranitidine, triamterene, verapamil, quinine, CNS depressants and dopamine antagonists like neuroleptics or metoclopramide.

Peculiarities and Recommendations Concerning Mirapex

Patients should be informed of the possibility of hallucinations (mostly visual) caused by Mirapex, which may affect ability to drive a car. Do not consume alcoholic drinks while being on Mirapex pills.
