Cafergot is a quite effective prescription only medication you should take after a prior consultation with your doctor.

What Does Cafergot Treat?

Cafergot is usually assigned to patients who suffer from migraines and severe headaches. The preparation is used only to reduce the upcoming pain; it won’t treat a severe headache in the middle of it. The medicine is also not able to reduce an amount of migraine attacks.

How to Take Cafergot Tabs?

The dosage can be adjusted by your therapist, especially if you suffer from certain medical conditions or belong to one of risk groups. Consult a healthcare provider before starting to use Cafergot pills since your dosage may differ from the average one.

Commonly Cafergot is not recommended for a regular daily-based usage. The average dosage of Cafergot is two pills as soon as a headache attack begins. Usually two pills taken in the beginning of headache is enough to stop spreading of pain, but sometimes you may require taking one more tablet in 30 minutes. It is allowed to take up to 6 tabs of Cafergot with 30-minutes intervals. Do not exceed this dose – only six pills per 24 hours are permitted to reduce one migraine attack.

It is also not allowed to consume more than 10 tabs of Cafergot in a 7-days interval.

Side Effects and Precautions of Cafergot

Never start using Cafergot prior to doctor’s strict instructions how to use it, especially if you have been through serious medical conditions including: any heart disorder or failure, any blood circulation problems, coronary artery disease, uncontrolled hypertension, a serious liver or kidney disease, sepsis infection, difficulties with breathing.

Do not consume Cafergot if you are breast-feeding or pregnant. FDA pregnancy didn’t approve it for taking during pregnancy and lactation since it can bring inevitable fatal birth defects to a newborn. The FDA pregnancy category of Cafergot is X.

Also make sure you don’t take a larger dose of Cafergot than was recommended. To overdose symptoms of this medication are referred: nausea along with vomiting, weak pulse, numbness of feet or hands, blue-colored fingers, tremors, fainting.

As any other drug Cafergot is able to cause a row of serious side effects including:
• Weakness and numbness of a body;
• Severe headache;
• Vision problems;
• Disorder of speech or loss of balance;
• Quick or uneven heart beating;
• Pain in muscles or legs;
• Less urination than usually;
• Swelling or itching;
• Sores on a rectum;
• Cough with severe chest pain and difficulties in breathing;
• Unstable hypertension you can’t control.

There are not all adverse reactions Cafergot is able to cause. Be careful when using this medication.

Interaction of Cafergot with Other Drugs

Never start applying Cafergot if you suffer from an allergy to its main components – caffeine and ergotamine.

Do not take Cafergot pills along with any other ergot-based preparations for treating migraines like Migranal or Sansert.

Also cease consuming Cafergot if you are taking or have recently stopped using the following medical preparations: conivaptan, diclofenac, imatinib, antibiotic drugs, antifungal agents, antidepressants, any blood pressure or heart medicines, HIV/AIDS drugs, birth control tablets, zileuton, cold or allergy medications; nicotine, diet pills, any stimulants, meds for curing ADHD (like Ritalin);nitroglycerin or nitrate based medicines.

Peculiarities and Recommendations Concerning Cafergot

Cafergot is only for a short-term use. It can’t be taken along with grapefruit juice because of the risk of increasing side effects Cafergot can cause. Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages along with Cafergot pills.
