Active ingredient: Estradiol.

What Does Estrace Treat?

Estrace is commonly applied for curing different symptoms occurred during menopause like hot flashes, vaginal discharge, burning and irritation of female genitalia. To the conditions Estrace is able to treat also belong: atrophic vaginitis, hypoestrogenism and osteoporosis prevention. These are traditional uses of Estrace as an estrogen substitute.

As for the off-label uses Estrace can be prescribed to patients who suffer from osteoporosis (during the postmenopausal period) women, to women having the ovarian failure or other reasons causing a lack of natural estrogen’s producing in a female body. In rare cases Estrace is used for treating certain symptoms of a breast cancer in women and men.

How to Take Estrace?

Estrace is supplied in pills which should be taken along with water, preferably on an empty stomach. The dosage of estrogen substitute should be assigned by a doctor according to the individual parameters of a patient.

The average dose of Estrace is up to 2 mg on a daily basis, (a cycle treatment - 3 weeks to take, 1 week to hold over).

Treatment involving Estrace therapy usually lasts at least 10 days (per every 1-3 months).

Side Effects and Precautions of Estrace

Before starting to take Estrace consult a gynecologist. Such medical conditions as mastodynia, breast secretion, uterine bleeding, GI upset, migraines, breast cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, coronary heart disease, blood circulation problems, asthma, epilepsy, porphyria, otosclerosis, thrombophlebitis, , hypertension, edema, hypercalcemia, gallbladder, thromboembolic disease, a liver or kidney failure may significantly impact on the dosage of Estrace to take during your therapy.

Children and pregnant women should not use this medication. The rating given by the FDA pregnancy is X which means Estrace is able to cause life-threatening side effects in babies during pregnancy or lactation.

Do not use Estrace in larger doses than were recommended because this may lead to such overdose symptoms as nausea along with vomiting, abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Like any other medication Estrace can cause a row of serious side effects among which are:
• Migraines;
• Depression;
• Dizziness;
• Abnormal liver or kidney functioning;
• Nausea;
• Jaundice (skin or eye yellowing);
• Vaginal bleeding;
• Edema;
• Sudden weight gain;
• Different allergic reactions like skin rash and redness;
• Melasma and chloasma.

This medication can also cause a row of other side effects which occur rarer and are not life-threatening.

Interaction of Estrace with Other Drugs

Estrogens may reduce the effect of anticoagulants, antihypertensive and hypoglycemic drugs. That is why it is not recommended to use this medication along with the enumerated groups of drugs. It is also advised to avoid taking Estrace while being on barbiturates, carbamazepine, griseofulvin, rifampicin which may significantly reduce the amount of estradiol in blood plasma.
